Celebrating National Princess Week: A Journey through Disney's Royal Lineage
Get ready to take a magical journey as we celebrate National Princess Week with a Royal Central takeover. From the fierce spirit of Mulan to the sweet nature of Cinderella, we'll be sharing amazing trivia about our favorite Disney princesses. Ever wondered how many lines Aurora speaks in her movie? Hey friends, coach Shelby and Coach Christine, welcoming you in and letting you know it's time for brunch, quick Bites Edition, where you can grab your miles with a side of smiles, take them on the run midday in the afternoon or a late night snack attack. And today we're a little fancier here at brunch. We've got our crowns, we've got our gloves and maybe a little extra little bit of magic, if you will, because it is a National Princess Week and to honor that, this entire week is Royal Central, as we embrace the power that the Disney princesses portray. Say that five times fast and reminding us all that we are powerful in our own right. Christine, let's be real, we love our runs, we love the big marathons, but I think that Princess Week may even top some of the world majors.
Speaker 2:I would agree.
Speaker 1:Let's not try to play coy. We're not going to be a slow roll villain here. We're just going to embrace the fact that we love our princesses.
Speaker 2:We do. We love all of the aspects of what the lessons that we can learn from the princesses, queens, royals, knight in shining armors, and while I would say that you could probably agree that the storylines of a lot of these traditional classic movies that we grew up with are changing, maybe they're getting a little bit of a modern twist, as we see with our Queen Elsa and just a little bit more of the latest princesses that have come into play there's still so much beauty in classic and sweet, sweet, wonderful lessons to learn. So I'm curious, like a nostalgic standpoint, if you were to throw on just I need a little bit of a comfort TV of a princess that I grew up watching. Who would that be for you? Because we do have that age difference, I'm so curious who that would be for you.
Speaker 1:I feel like this is the least chill of all. But I love Mulan. I always loved Mulan. I had a Barbie of Mulan and it was really cool because it had the warrior outfit and then it had the dress and you had her hair and you could use the sword to cut the hair, like it reattached. It wasn't like a psycho Barbie cutting the hair type of thing situation and I just loved it. And I think it actually now speaks to my personality because I love being all feminine and girly and all of this and then I love just ripping it off and being like hey, here I am, world, and take me or leave me. So I'd go for it.
Speaker 2:Do you think that with Mulan too, it's the fact that she was able to kind of embrace past cultural norms and be a little bit of like both just totally just fierce warrior and super sweet, loyal daughter all in one package.
Speaker 1:I'm going to be honest. When I saw it, when I was sick I six I don't think that I necessarily realized that it was going against like cultural boundaries. I'd like to say I was not aware at six, but I think it was more like oh pretty, I want to bet dragon that talks to a cricket.
Speaker 2:Okay, I think she broke it down that way. Yes, thank you for that reminder.
Speaker 1:But yes, I mean now as an adult, I'm like get it girl. Yeah, I think that's probably why she stood the test of time.
Speaker 2:And that's quoting another great movie but you know, I think for me Milan I was much older at that point that Milan came around so I thought she was amazing, that she was fierce, but I was definitely. She wasn't like what my nostalgic. I did grow up with more of like the super classic ones like Snow White and Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast. I think I was starting to kind of get into an age where maybe wasn't watching Disney quite as much at that point, but I loved Cinderella. I just love the entire story. I love the evil stepsisters, as you're well aware.
Speaker 2:I love, like the mice and the cat and the dog, just all these little minor players are so much fun in the script of it and so much just like warm and fuzzies. But I have to say that my favorite rendition of Cinderella, which has been redone three gazillion times, is ever after with Drew Barrymore. I could watch that three gazillion times.
Speaker 1:Oh, that is a good one I've talked about before. My dad happens to love that one. I also love the Hans Christian Anderson one with Brandy and Whitney Houston. That one because I love you know, I love my music and my musicals. I absolutely loved that version. I put it on the other day and it brought back all the feels.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I think that that was an absolutely phenomenal version as well. But now I'm going to hit you with a couple of little trivia things because I'm so curious if maybe you know these. So maybe a princess that we've been taking a lot of inspiration from recently kind of comes to mind. So, with that said, which princess only speaks 18 lines throughout the entire movie? 18 lines, 18 lines. Okay, I feel like it's going to be pretty cool.
Speaker 1:Okay, I feel like it's going to be one that falls asleep, so so I'm going to say Aurora, yes.
Speaker 2:Wait, did any other princesses fall asleep? Snow White.
Speaker 1:Yeah, that's true she did, but I think she was awake for most of them. Wow, it really. Would you break these down as an adult? It gets dark really, really fast.
Speaker 2:Well, I mean, they are based on some pretty dark and grim kind of fairy tales, of course. But yeah, it's interesting. I don't know if I would have guessed it. You're just so good. I feel like your Disney Plus subscription is definitely like fired up.
Speaker 1:You mean?
Speaker 2:your Disney Plus subscription, the one we share. The one we share, yes, we share Disney.
Speaker 1:Plus, don't come at us Now, okay. So, talking about fairy tales, do you know the only movie that actually is based on a real person?
Speaker 2:Oh, it has to be Pocahontas.
Speaker 1:Yes, yeah, even though the fairies go out of liberties. Yeah, they took a lot. I've I've Googled the real story of Pocahontas. Don't do it. I mean, yes, do it because you want to be educated, but don't do it Like, just, I mean you got to again separating the two, but I loved Pocahontas too. I know. I know everybody doesn't like the sequels as much, but it was, it was pretty good.
Speaker 2:You're a sequels gal, though, because you love Frozen too as well.
Speaker 1:I do. I do like a sequel, as funny as it is. A lot of times I'll see the sequel before the first one. I did that with a not Disney related but a couple other franchises and I saw like either the third or the second before I saw the first.
Speaker 2:So I feel like we should back it up a little bit and say, first and foremost, people, we are not making up National Prince this week. I kind of feel like some people may be rolling through here and be like he had a toilet made this up just to speak.
Speaker 1:What if we are like he?
Speaker 2:has, but we're not, and there is a National Princess Week timeline. A little history on the actual word princess it was used to address the daughter of a ruler or wife of a prince, and that came to be in late 14th century, then 1385, it's actually first recorded in writing. The word princess is used in Shao Sers, the night's tale, and then 1937, which I think is absolutely fascinating. What was the first Disney Princess movie released, as far as you know?
Speaker 1:I would probably say Snow White.
Speaker 2:According to this history timeline, she wasn't officially a princess, so the Disney Princess movie was Persephone and it was released in 1937. That was the first actual Disney Princess movie, though we do know Snow White is definitely considered a princess now, so I think that's that's fascinating. I wonder if we can find that on Disney Plus.
Speaker 2:I have to be, if they've got Justino on there, which is a Dolly collaboration. It's a seller. Dolly and Disney did a collaboration on a short and it was called you love your shorts and I loved Dolly, and I love Dolly and Disney and it's just, it's perfect. And then in 2012 is when, actually, national Princess Week is celebrated for the first time and brings us to today where we are going to go celebrate. I feel like I want to go check out all the Disney treats that are royally Inspired for the week. My gosh, don't, don't tell me about it.
Speaker 1:I just posted on Instagram and Facebook and don't tell me about it. But do you know who's actually credited to helping create National Princess Week? No, I wouldn't know you. Do you want to hand or do you want me to just?
Speaker 2:like give it out. I have no clue.
Speaker 1:Julie Andrews, really, yep, julie Andrews was always vocally encouraging children to do it. She was always vocally encouraging children to dream big and everything, and coming up with a celebration gave her a better way to reach out and inspire. So I mean, she did play the Queen of Genovia, so she was destined to do it.
Speaker 2:I love that.
Speaker 1:I love Julie Andrews, julie Andrews.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I mean she is exceptional and when I think of somebody who brings across like those royal characteristics as real characteristics and come to mind when you think of royalty, Julie Andrews definitely doesn't body them all kindness and intelligence and wit, and again, just super, super classic in the way that she holds herself or did hold herself.
Speaker 1:But we learned, with a spoonful of sugar, the medicine does go down.
Speaker 2:I feel like there's a spoonful of sugar in everything nowadays, so I'm not surprised that is the case.
Speaker 1:My kid asked me if there was sugar in my coffee and then that got into a whole long explanation of how we all drink our coffees differently, which then was like a parallel for life. It got really deep on the car line Like we had some really deep conversations. I'm like can we just talk about princesses right now?
Speaker 2:I mean I'm not surprised that you guys had this conversation, because that seems like something you would have, but in the car line it seems kind of intense.
Speaker 1:It was a lot, but now my kid didn't know this. But I feel like you're going to know this. Do you know how many official princesses there are?
Speaker 2:Oh gosh, I feel like I should know this. I feel like it's 17. Nope how many 13. Oh really, Lucky number 13. Lucky number 13.
Speaker 1:There are only 13 official princesses. Do you want to try to take a stab at who they are? Oh, gosh, I feel like you know, the OG ones but I feel like once you get to the new wave. You're going to struggle a bit.
Speaker 2:So Snow White, then we had Princess Aurora, then we had Cinderella, then we had Belle Pocahontas, ariel, mulan oh you're right, I am struggling. Okay, wait, you got seven. Okay, wait, callie, okay Tiana, and then I'm starting to mismatch. Okay, of course Elsa does.
Speaker 1:Elsa is not, she's a queen but I mean Elsa and Anna are not official princesses. How is that?
Speaker 2:possible. I feel like we need to submit a petition. Okay, they're not. So let me think. Who else, goodness, is Moana considered a princess? I feel like she should be her. She is a princess. Okay, so we've got Moana. So I'm up to nine. I need four more.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, I'm actually surprised you missed an OG. Yes, merida, oh, I missed an OG. I can't miss an OG. Okay, I don't think you would age out by this point either, and that's not a slam on your age, I'm just saying.
Speaker 2:Um, it wasn't Ariel, because I got her. Yeah we got Ariel, okay, so I'm up to 10 and I'm missing three. I feel like I should know Tangold girl's name. Oh my, how do you?
Speaker 1:not know Rapunzel. Yes, she is part of it, but that actually surprised me. I did not think Rapunzel was an official princess.
Speaker 2:Uh well, I mean Rapunzel, like the storyline that I grew up with, was always a princess, so that would make sense. Oh gosh, I don't know who are the other two. Like I'm missing two, and now it's driving me nuts. So Raya, oh Raya, I love and the OG.
Speaker 1:You forgot Jasmine.
Speaker 2:Oh, how could I forget Jasmine? I, I feel like I need to go into princess purgatory. I'm just gonna, I'm gonna set myself to my room and I have to watch Disney movies until until I'm allowed to come out with the full knowledge of the 13. Yeah, how did I forget Jasmine? Okay, well, I will do better, coach, I promise in the future.
Speaker 1:You need to study and you're longer in this week. I'm going to make you do a mile for every princess you forgot.
Speaker 2:Hey, I mean with the princess half. That is 13 miles, 13 princesses. We could dedicate a mile per princess. I can make that happen. Why haven't they done that?
Speaker 1:yet I don't know That'd be a lot, that'd be a lot.
Speaker 2:But that'd be really cool.
Speaker 1:That'd be a lot of medals, that's for sure, and not everybody has a disdain for medals like you do.
Speaker 2:I like medals?
Speaker 1:I do, I do, but you do lie. You like medals, but you do lie because they're sitting in a box underneath your bath.
Speaker 2:I just don't know where to put them at this point. But with that said, coach, let's get into, like some of the name translations, because do you know what princess Moana's name could be translated to?
Speaker 1:I feel like it'd be ocean or something like that. Yeah, you're, you're really. Yeah, it was context clues on that one.
Speaker 2:Yeah, that's true. How about Magnolia? Which princess? Which princess's name could be translated to Magnolia?
Speaker 1:Oh Merida.
Speaker 2:No, that's a good quote. I mean, I personally would think of Tiana, because I think of like it being based in like the south and the south of Magnolia, maybe from still Magnolia's, and I'm confusing it. But no, it wasn't her either. Oh, who was it? Melon?
Speaker 1:Oh, I would have thought that was like a like a lily or something.
Speaker 2:Yeah, me too. I was a little surprised with that one as well. Okay.
Speaker 1:I'll take that, I mean I'll accept. I mean I felt not like I can change it, but I'll like. I'll say that.
Speaker 2:I do want to have one last thing, just one last thing, because I feel like when we think of princesses, sometimes you can think about about a little bit of like, diva, like behavior, and when I think of divas, I think of costume changes and like requiring like hair and makeup. So there's one Disney princess who wears 22 different outfits in the length of her movie and five different hairstyles. So I'm thinking a little diva energy there. Who do you think that princess is?
Speaker 1:Oh wow, that's a hard one. I'm between Cinderella or Ariel.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's not an OG princess. I'll give you that hint. So let's. Oh, I'm going to go into princess purgatory too. I am, I have no idea.
Speaker 1:I literally have no idea, because I don't remember anybody changing that much. Merida, oh, now who? I would have thought.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I mean either, because that's like the complete opposite of what I would think of as a diva. So while we're talking about princesses, there is a lot to talk about the princess. Prince, this how do you pluralize a prince without a song?
Speaker 1:You're sounding like princess I think it's prince is you got to, you got to take like the pause.
Speaker 2:So let's talk a little bit about them. I feel like they get kind of like second billing. So in essentially, do you have to get at the ready of the rest of the week of the year.
Speaker 1:It's all a man's world, so that's probably why let's just keep it real here, folks.
Speaker 2:I mean, do you have a favorite prince? Though, if you were to think about one, probably Prince Eric.
Speaker 1:Really he's the most dreamy to me. He is Either him or Naveen. I don't like Naveen's personality, like in the beforehand, but I mean going purely off of looks. Oh, but then Flynn Rider's pretty good too.
Speaker 2:I do feel like your husband does have some Prince Eric traits, with the dark hair and the same color eyes. He's baby faced.
Speaker 1:He ain't. No, he doesn't have. Like the all the princesses have, like the chiseled trim, like I love, I love, I love you, honey, if you're listening, but he's got like the baby dough face.
Speaker 2:Uh, but it's still dark hair like color eyes like Prince Eric, interesting Girl facial hair.
Speaker 1:It's all, it's all relative.
Speaker 2:I think everyone knows that my favorite Prince bar none is always going to be the beast. Any man who gives me a library full of books is going to. He beats Prince Charming any day of the week.
Speaker 1:No, yeah, I would I probably say like, either. Like OG Eric, Prince Eric from Ariel and then new school. I would probably say Flynn Rider from Rapunzel.
Speaker 2:Hmm, just really funny and witty. I could see that. I could see that. Well, friends, we want to hear from you who's your favorite princess, what kind of favorite little princess trivia fact do you have, and who's your favorite Prince Cause I feel like the princesses do get a lot of loves. But I want to hear, I want to hear something about the Prince as well. This is very weird to me. I'm having difficulty with that.
Speaker 1:Now, did you know, and I didn't realize, a lot of the older movies, like Mulan is not old movie but older movie. The actor and the actresses who voiced Mulan and Lee Shang did not do the singing.
Speaker 2:I'm not surprised by that, because I feel like recently the trend is is to get voice actors and actresses that have a very distinct voice and personality, but they may not have the best singing voice. So that's not surprising, but I did not know that.
Speaker 1:I was surprised that, going through the different facts and everything, there was a lot that surprised me, but I think none other than the ages. And looking back now at the hilarity when you watch them as kids, you're like they're grownups. Why are their parents telling them what to do? And then you realize how young they are and you're like girl, go get a Barbie, like go go get a monster truck or something and like simmer down now.
Speaker 2:So I don't think, I think that from the list of 13, I would say vastly a majority of them were under the age of 18.
Speaker 1:Yes, which is probably problematic in today's day and age. In today's day and age.
Speaker 2:But based off the original fairy tales, like when they were written, like I don't know, four, five, 600 years ago. This was probably like they were midlife at that point. Because they were midlife, life expectancy is like 40 years of age when some of these tales came about.
Speaker 1:But no white for sure. Do you know the youngest princess?
Speaker 2:I feel like, in terms of how young they come across, it would look like Ariel to me because I feel like she, like her father figure, was really involved.
Speaker 1:Nope, she was. At least she was actually 16. Oh the hood we have.
Speaker 2:Snow white Really. Well, she does have a cute little baby face too. So yeah, I can see that.
Speaker 1:You know how old she was?
Speaker 2:I feel like if Ariel was 16 and you sound like this is like the worst thing you've ever heard in your life she had least a teenager she was 14. That was midlife back 600 years ago.
Speaker 1:The movie wasn't made 600 years ago. They could take some creative liberties.
Speaker 2:That is true, that is true.
Speaker 1:Across the board. Jasmine was 15, merida, moana, aurora, ariel and Mulan were all 16. Belle was 17. Rapunzel Pocahontas were 18. Tiana and Cinderella were 19. I was Moana 16.
Speaker 2:Like I get, and I mean I don't get that I feel like the younger prince, like the more recent princesses, should have been older. Is there a specific reason why?
Speaker 1:No see as funny as this. For me, Moana would have been like oh yeah, she was probably like 14. Yeah, just because she still had more of that youthful zest that you lose, apparently, at 16. Speaking from experience, but but really like, that's where I would have thought about that. I think also too, because in the newer movies, like Raya Moana, they don't have love interests. So I would have thought a little bit different. But you know, I just realized this one doesn't have on here how old Raya was supposed to be.
Speaker 2:She had to have been See. I feel like she came across like she was in her early 20s, but maybe not.
Speaker 1:No, and again, I would have probably thought she was like 15, 16, given, like how it has her younger in the beginning, I would have thought she was like nine. She was supposed to be 18. Hmm, wow, interesting. So her father was frozen for like half her life. That just got depressing.
Speaker 2:Well, friends. With that said, we are celebrating Prince this week and after. Coach Shelby is still like amazed by their ages. So we're girls with however old you are, however old your children are. This is a great week to celebrate a little bit of royalty in your life. So some ideas that you could celebrate at home if you don't have Disney just down the corners maybe doing a little DIY crown and tiara crafting, maybe doing a little bit of dress-up for those long runs. Maybe you're gonna put yourself in Princess Purgatory with us and come watch some Princess Movie marathons. We would love, love to hear how you choose to celebrate With. That said, coach, I think we're excited about this weekend because we have quite the fun in store, would you not say?
Speaker 1:I'm royally flushed, to say the least.
Speaker 2:Yes, I would wholeheartedly agree. There's gonna be a lot of royal fleshes. So, with that said, that sounds like a bathroom running problem that I ever heard, one. Would you go to a Porto Potty if it's called the Royal Flesh?
Speaker 1:I mean, let's be honest, I think that would probably be the best run Disney photo stop ever. Disney, just call us. We've got your whole half marathon and a Porto Potty in the making, ready to be the fourth child, ready to be the 14th princess.
Speaker 2:It is funny we do have the local race directors, track Shack, who they do have a race that has the Royal Flesh. For the record, it's a VIP Porto Potty experience. I'm sure it is Friends if you choose to celebrate with your own Royal Flesh. We wanna not hear about that one.
Speaker 1:No, we don't wanna hear about the Royal Flesh.
Speaker 2:We wanna see your DIY TRRs. We don't wanna hear about your Royal Flesh, but we do want you to join us again this weekend because we are going to have a whole lot of fun.
